How to scan your resume for keywords

  1. Copy the whole job description, including the requirements and nice-to-have sections.
  2. Copy your resume as plain text. If you cannot select the text in your PDF, neither can an ATS.
  3. Paste both into the boxes above and run the check.
  4. Read the missing keywords first: these are skills the posting names that your resume never mentions.

What to do with missing keywords

A missing keyword is either a skill you have but did not write down, or a skill you do not have yet. For the first kind, add it to the experience or project bullet where you used it, using the job description's spelling. A keyword that appears only in a skills list is weaker than one tied to something you built.

For the second kind, leave it out. Recruiters ask about every skill on a resume, and an interview is a bad place to discover a keyword you added to pass a filter. The scanner's full keyword list shows every term and spelling it matches, and the ATS-friendly resume format guide shows where each section goes.

Want a single number for how well your resume fits the posting? The ATS resume checker gives the same check as a match score.

Keywords by role

Each role page lists the skills to put on that resume, with example bullets for each experience level.

Questions

How do I find keywords in a job description?
Paste the full job description into the scanner with your resume. It picks out the technical skills, tools and languages the posting names, and also lists other words the posting repeats, so you can see what the employer is searching for.
How does the resume keyword matcher decide what counts?
Each keyword is matched as a whole word, so "Java" never counts as "JavaScript", and common spellings count as the same skill: "K8s" counts as Kubernetes and "Postgres" as PostgreSQL. The full list of keywords and spellings it recognises is published on the software engineer resume keywords page.
Is this resume keyword analyzer free, and is my resume stored?
It is free and needs no login or sign-up. The scan runs in your browser, so neither your resume nor the job description is uploaded or stored.
Should I add every missing keyword to my resume?
No. Add a missing keyword only if you have used that skill, and put it in the experience or project bullet where you used it. A skills list full of words you cannot talk about in an interview does more harm than a lower match.
Does it work for jobs other than software?
Its vocabulary is technical: languages, frameworks, cloud, data and testing tools. It suits software, data, DevOps and QA roles. For other roles it still lists the words a posting repeats, but it will not score them.
