Third-Party Library Integration & Client Wrappers

The 30-Second Interview Answer

Many npm packages rely on React hooks (useState, useEffect) or browser globals without declaring "use client". To safely use them in Server Components, developers create a thin wrapper component marked with "use client" that re-exports the library component, establishing an explicit boundary.

Learning Objectives

Diagnose runtime errors caused by third-party packages lacking "use client" directives.

Build thin client wrapper components to isolate legacy libraries.

Avoid pulling entire barrel files into client bundles when wrapping utilities.

Handle window and document references in third-party libraries gracefully.

Why Interviewers Care

Frequent real-world engineering challenge tested in live coding and architecture screens.

The Challenge

Why do many popular npm packages crash with "useState is not a function" when imported directly into Server Components? How do client wrapper components solve this issue?

Code Architecture & Implementation

1// Problem: An older carousel package uses useState internally but forgot "use client"
2// import { LegacyCarousel } from 'legacy-react-carousel'; // ❌ Crashes in Server Component!
3
4// SOLUTION: Create a dedicated client wrapper
5// components/carousel-wrapper.tsx
6'use client';
7
8import { LegacyCarousel, CarouselProps } from 'legacy-react-carousel';
9
10export function CarouselWrapper(props: CarouselProps) {
11 return <LegacyCarousel {...props} />;
12}
13
14// Now you can safely use it inside any Server Component!
15// app/page.tsx (Server Component)
16import { CarouselWrapper } from '@/components/carousel-wrapper';
17
18export default async function HomePage() {
19 const slides = await fetch('https://api.cms.com/slides').then(r => r.json());
20
21 return (
22 <section>
23 <h1>Featured Highlights</h1>
24 <CarouselWrapper items={slides} autoPlay={true} />
25 </section>
26 );
27}

Architectural Explanation

The Root Cause

Prior to the App Router and RSC specification, React packages did not need the "use client" directive. When imported into an App Router Server Component:

  • The bundler executes the package code on the server.
  • The package calls useState, useEffect, or reads window.
  • Because Server Components run in a server context without hooks, the runtime throws: Error: useState can only be called inside the body of a Function Component.

The Client Wrapper Pattern

Creating a thin wrapper with "use client" provides an explicit boundary marker:

  1. The wrapper file is added to the client bundle.
  2. The third-party library is evaluated only within the client component tree.
  3. The parent Server Component imports the wrapper, passing server-fetched data as props.

Common Mistakes & Anti-Patterns

Adding "use client" to the entire parent page instead of creating a focused wrapper around just the third-party widget.

Re-exporting an entire component library through a single client wrapper file, destroying tree-shaking.

Attempting to mock window or document on the server instead of using a client wrapper.

Interview Follow-Up Traps

Interviewer asks: "Why don't all libraries just add \"use client\" to their exports?" Trap answer: They are lazy. Correct answer: Adding \"use client\" forces components into the client bundle even if they could have remained server-only. Library authors must carefully separate server-compatible components from client-interactive ones.

Interviewer asks: "If a wrapper component has \"use client\", does that mean its props must be serializable?" Trap answer: No, it is just a wrapper. Correct answer: Yes! Any prop passed from a Server Component into the wrapper must be serializable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do modern component libraries (like shadcn/ui or Radix UI) require wrappers?

shadcn/ui copies primitives directly into your codebase with "use client" already attached, while modern Radix packages include "use client" directives.

Yes. next/dynamic with { ssr: false } can defer loading until the browser if the library strictly requires browser window objects.

No. The client wrapper is still pre-rendered to HTML on the server during initial SSR.

Typically in a components/client/ or components/wrappers/ folder alongside the UI library.

Create a client ThemeProvider or QueryProvider component marked with "use client" and render it in your root layout.
