Software Engineer Resume for Freshers
With no work experience, your resume has to show what you can build. This guide covers the section order, how to write project bullets, which skills to list for your target role, and how to keep the format readable by applicant tracking systems.
Check my resume freeSection order for a fresher resume
Put education and projects near the top. They are your strongest evidence until you have a full-time job, and a recruiter skimming the page should reach them first.
| Section | Include | Leave out |
|---|---|---|
| Header | Name, phone, a professional email, city, and links to LinkedIn and GitHub. | Photo, date of birth, full address, marital status. Recruiters do not need them. |
| Education | Degree, branch, college, graduation year and CGPA. Add relevant coursework only if the role asks for it. | School marks in detail. Class 10 and 12 percentages are enough if a company asks for them. |
| Skills | Languages, frameworks, databases and tools you have used in a project, grouped by type. | Rating bars, "MS Office", and anything you could not answer an interview question on. |
| Projects | 2 to 4 projects. Each with what it does, the stack, your part in it, and a link to the code or live demo. | Tutorial clones listed without anything you added, and projects with no link. |
| Internships | Company, role, dates, and 2 or 3 bullets on what you built or fixed. | Listing duties ("responsible for testing") instead of what you did. |
| Achievements | Hackathon results, competitive programming ratings, open-source contributions, relevant certifications. | Participation certificates with no result, and coding profiles you no longer use. |
How to write project bullets
Projects replace work experience on a fresher resume, so write them the way you would write a job. Each bullet should say what you built, with which tools, and what it does or what changed. Name your own part if it was a team project, and link the code or the live app so a reviewer can check it.
EXAMPLE (FICTIONAL)
Before: Made an e-commerce website using MERN stack.
After: Built a store with React, Node.js, Express.js and MongoDB: product search, cart, JWT login and Razorpay test-mode checkout. Deployed on Render; wrote the API and the payment flow in a team of three.
Skills to list by target role
List what you have used in a project, not everything you have read about. The job posting is the best guide: match its spelling of each skill. The software engineer resume keywords page lists every technical term our free check recognises.

Keep the format ATS friendly
- One column. Two-column templates can be read out of order by parsing software.
- Standard headings: Education, Skills, Projects, Experience, Achievements.
- A text-based PDF. If you cannot select the text in your PDF, neither can an ATS.
- No skills hidden in images, icons or rating bars.
- One page, with dates in one consistent format.
Back it up in the interview
Anything on your resume is fair game for questions, and fresher interviews lean on data structures, algorithms and the language you list first. FaangPrep has free DSA visualizers, JavaScript interview questions and React interview questions to prepare with.
Questions
- How do I write a software engineer resume with no experience?
- Lead with education and projects. Two to four projects with working links, each described by what it does, the stack you used and what you built, do the job that work experience does for others. Add internships, hackathons and coding contest results if you have them.
- Should a fresher resume be one page?
- Yes. With no full-time work history, one page is enough for education, skills, projects and achievements. If it runs over, cut weaker projects and older achievements before shrinking the font.
- Should I put my CGPA on my resume?
- Yes. Many campus and off-campus hiring processes in India filter on CGPA, and leaving it out makes a recruiter assume it is low. Write it the way your college reports it, for example "CGPA: 8.1/10".
- Do I need a photo on my resume?
- No. For software roles a photo adds nothing a recruiter evaluates and takes space from your projects. The same goes for date of birth, address and marital status.
- How do I make a fresher resume ATS friendly?
- Use one column, standard headings such as Education, Skills and Projects, and a text-based PDF rather than a scanned image. Then compare it against the job posting: the free FaangPrep resume check lists which of the posting’s technical keywords your resume has and which it misses, with no sign-up.
Does your resume match the job you want?
Paste your resume and a job description. No sign-up, nothing uploaded.
